La Purisima Mission State Park - 10/13/2007
The La Purisima Audubon's Saturday Oct 13th birdwalk was at La Purisima Mission State Historic Park, Lompoc. The park is a great place to walk, with 1860 acres and restored mission buildings. It is probably the best restored mission in CA, since it is still surrounded by undeveloped land. The walk covered only the garden and grounds surrounding the buildings. The best birds seen today were the male Red-naped Sapsucker, seen in the parking lot trees, and a Willow Flycatcher, seen near the pigpens. We saw 34 species of birds, a few Mule Deer with fawns (just a couple yards from us as we walked through the garden) and one cottontail.
Bird list: CA Quail, Turkey Vulture, Red-shouldered Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Killdeer, Mourning Dove, Anna's Hummingbird, Red-naped Sapsucker, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Willow Flycatcher, Black Phoebe, Say's Phoebe, Hutton's Vireo, Western Scrub-jay, American Crow, Tree Swallow, Wrentit, Bewick's Wren, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, CA Thrasher, European Starling, Orange-crowned Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, CA Towhee, Spotted Towhee, Song Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Red-winged Blackbird, Brewer's Blackbird, House Finch, American Goldfinch and Lesser Goldfinch.
Oceano - 9/22/2007
The LPAS Oceano field trip had a light turnout, probably due to rain last night. We had nice weather for the trip, partly cloudy and cool, but not cool enough to need jackets. We saw 66 species of birds, one muskrat & some Western Pond Turtles. Best bird would be the Blackpoll Warbler (fall plumage), a "lifebird" for Tam. The Vaux's Swifts were nice, too.

Guadalupe Dunes County Park - 8/25/2007
The Saturday August 25th LPAS fieldtrip to Guadalupe Dunes County Park (Santa Maria River Estuary) had clear, warm weather (did not even need a jacket). The air was so clear that the nuclear power plant was very clear from the beach. We had 68 species of birds, CA Sealions, dolphins that seemed to small to be Bottlenoses and 2 Sea Otters. Best bird was probably the (one) Semipalmated Sandpiper (of which I have good photos). Red-necked Phalaropes were close enough for good photos, too. Thousands of Sooty Shearwater constantly flew by, going north. Pigeon Guillemots were in various stages of molt, looking more interesting than they really were. We also saw 4 White-faced Ibis, which I don't always see at the estuary. The surprise was a lack of terns. There was a fly-by of 3 Elegant Terns, but that was it.
Total Bird Species: Mallard, Gadwall, No Shoveler, Cinnamon Teal, Common Loon (1), Clark's Grebe (2), Western Grebe, Sooty Shearwater, Pink-footed Shearwater (1), Brown Pelican, Brandt's Cormorant, Double-crested Cormorant, Black-crowned Night-heron, Snowy Egret, Great Blue Heron, White-faced Ibis (4), Turkey Vulture, No Harrier, Red-tailed Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Am Kestrel, Am Coot, Snowy Plover, Semipalamted Plover, Killdeer, Lesser Yellowlegs, Greater Yellowlegs, Spotted Sandpiper, Whimbrel, Long-billed Curlew, Marbled Godwit, Balck Turnstone (1), Sanderling, Western Sandpiper, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Short-billed Dowitcher, Red-necked Phalarope, Heerman's Gull, Western Gull, CA Gull, Herring Gull (1), Elegant Tern (3), Pigeon Guillemot, Rock Pigeon, Mourning Dove, Eur Collared-dove, Belted Kingfisher (1), Black Phoebe, Loggerhead Shrike (1), Western Scrub-jay, Am Crow, Cliff Swallow, Barn Swallow, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Bushtit, House Wren, Bewick's Wren, Eur Starling, Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Savannah Sparrow, Song Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow (1), Red-winged Blackbird, Brewer's Blackbird, House Finch, Am Goldfinch and Lesser Goldfinch.
